Kryptor

Running Kryptor

GUI stands for Graphical User Interface, and CLI stands for Command Line Interface. The GUI version of Kryptor runs like a typical Windows program, whereas the CLI version must be run from the command line/terminal.

GUI Installer:

  1. Run the downloaded installer ('KryptorSetup.exe') by clicking on the file and following the instructions.
  2. You can now launch Kryptor via the desktop shortcut (if 'Create a desktop shortcut' was ticked in the installer) or via the Start menu (search for 'Kryptor' in the taskbar).

GUI Portable:

  1. Navigate to the location of the downloaded ZIP file (e.g. the Downloads folder).
  2. Right click the 'KryptorGUI-Windows.zip' file and select 'Extract All'.
  3. Open the extracted folder (called 'KryptorGUI-Windows') and click on 'Kryptor.exe' to run the program.
  4. You can then move this extracted folder to another location (e.g your documents folder). However, do not move the folder somewhere where Kryptor requires administrative privileges because the program will not be able to access any files.

CLI Portable:

  1. Navigate to the location of the downloaded ZIP file (e.g. the Downloads folder).
  2. Right click the 'KryptorCLI-Windows.zip' file and select 'Extract All'.
  3. Open up the Command Prompt (e.g. search for 'cmd' in the taskbar) and navigate to the path of the extracted folder (e.g. cd C:\Users\USERNAME\Downloads\KryptorCLI-Windows).
  4. Type 'kryptor --help' for a list of commands and some examples.
  5. When referencing file paths/names with spaces in them, you must surround the file path/name with " " on Windows.

Notes:

You will get a Windows SmartScreen popup when launching the GUI version of Kryptor on Windows because this is new and unknown software. You can read more about this in the FAQ.

The GUI version requires .NET Framework 4.8 to be installed. Windows will prompt you to install this if it is not installed.

I recommend using the CLI version of Kryptor because there's no runtime (Mono/Wine) requirement.

CLI:

  1. Navigate to the location of the downloaded ZIP file (e.g. the Downloads folder).
  2. Right click the 'KryptorCLI-Linux.zip' file and select 'Extract to...'.

  4. Make the program executable using 'chmod +x kryptor'.
  5. Type './kryptor --help' for a list of commands and some examples.
  6. When referencing file paths/names with spaces in them, you must surround the file path/name with ' ' on Linux.
  7. You can move the 'kryptor' file to /home for easier access from the terminal.

GUI:

  1. Navigate to the location of the downloaded ZIP file (e.g. the Downloads folder).
  2. Right click the 'KryptorGUI-Linux.zip' file and select 'Extract to...'.
  3. Download the Mono runtime. Install the 'mono-complete' package to avoid errors running Kryptor.
  4. Open the extracted folder (called 'KryptorGUI-Linux') and click on 'Kryptor.exe' to run the program. Alternatively, you can navigate to the Kryptor folder in your terminal and use the 'mono ./Kryptor.exe' command to execute the program.
  5. You can then move this extracted folder to another location (e.g your documents folder). However, do not move the folder somewhere where Kryptor requires security privileges because the program will not be able to access any files.
